http://www.attivissimo.net/antibufala/giulia_leucemia/donazioni_sangue.htm

Slashdot | Microsoft Silently Backs Favorable Presentation at RSA: "Two researchers, from the Florida Institute of Technology and Boston-based Security Innovation Inc., 'surprised the audience at a computer-security convention last month with their finding that a version of Microsoft Windows was more secure than a competing Linux operating system' according to the Seattle Post-Intelligencer. [IxT] Apparizione mistica!!

Passenger screening gimmick stuck at the gate | The Register

Passenger screening gimmick stuck at the gate | The Register: "The US Transportation Security Administration (TSA) is behind schedule in developing a new terrorist-busting database system called Secure Flight... here we have something out of Star Trek, in which taxpayers are investing billions, with so many potential points of failure that it will be a miracle if it doesn't increase the risk of hijackings.

It be full of bad data that will repeatedly flag and inconvenience the wrong travellers. (The existing CAPPS system didn't stop the 9/11 hijackers, although it did catch US Senator Edward Kennedy and former singer Cat Stevens, for example.)

Worse, a system such as this is, by design, exceptionally easy for terrorists to reverse-engineer. By making a series of 'dry runs,' a terrorist crew can easily learn which members get flagged and which don't, insight of tremendous value for choosing the individuals most likely to succeed in an actual attack."

Crittografia quantistica in GB

Quantum crypto comes to Blighty | The Register: "UK reseller NOW Wireless has signed a deal to distribute MagiQtech's quantum cryptography solution, MagiQ QPN Security Gateway, in the UK. Launched in the US in 2004, MagiqTech's two-box solution, provides secure quantum key exchange between two dedicated sites up to 120km apart. Once secure keys are exchanged, data can be encrypted using standard protocols, switching keys at up to 100 times per second...

There are a few problems with quantum cryptography, however. While it cannot be cracked, in the traditional sense of the word, it is susceptible to a denial-of-service-style attack... It is also difficult to route, since the routing process itself would access, and thus disrupt the data being routed. Until this problem is solved, QC is limited to use between two dedicated points."

EU sleuths think Microsoft sabotaged Windows

...the European Commission is investigating the possibility that the Vole has sneakily sabotaged the Media Player-free versions of Windows it is obliged to ship to the EU... A report in today’s Wall Street Journal suggests Microsoft has fiddled with the registry in its stripped-down Windows offerings and the result is that video clips embedded into Microsoft Word documents don’t run properly, for example.

The Journal quotes Jonathan Todd, a spokesman for European antitrust chief Neelie Kroes... he said, "the commission has to verify the requirement that Microsoft refrain from using any commercial, technological or contractual terms that would have the effect of rendering the unbundled version of Windows less attractive or less functional."

The detailed personal information was gathered by market researchers who asked the questions as part of a fake survey on theatre-going habits. Dangling the chance to win free tickets was enough to make people surrender everything needed to impersonate them.... One of the questions was about the way that actors pick stage names. Those taking part in the survey were told that many stage names are created using a pet's name and the actor's mother's maiden name. When asked what their stage name would be using the same criteria, 94% volunteered information.

If you have recently bought an IBM ThinkVantage computer, a Dell Optiplex, or one of a whole range of laptops from Toshiba, HP/Compaq or Samsung then you may have got more for your money than you realised.

Inside your shiny new PC is an extra chip called the trusted platform module (TPM) that can be used for a range of hardware-based security features."

The largest network of so-called zombie networks spied on by the team was made up of 50,000 hijacked home computers."

Apple de-socializes iTunes | The Register

Apple de-socializes iTunes | The Register: "Bit by bit, Apple is tightening the DRM noose, reducing the amount of freedom its own customers enjoy. Last year, the company cut the number of times users could burn a playlist from ten to seven. This time, Apple has chosen to cripple one of its coolest and most socially beneficial technologies - Rendezvous.

Apple actually applied the restriction two months ago, but the passage of time hasn't made it any sweeter. In iTunes, Rendezvous allows users on the same subnet to share their music - although this is limited to streaming only. But the most recent version of iTunes, 4.7.1, restricts that streaming capability even further, and users aren't happy, as this support discussion shows. It used to support five simultaneous listeners, but now iTunes only permits five listeners a day."

After several reports of consoles catching fire, Microsoft urged 14 million console owners to send in their old power leads for a replacement. But hardware experts point out that the power cable was never at root of the problem: it simply made the existing problem worse. The meltdown, and subsequent fire risk was actually caused by wear and tear on the power supply used in early models of the Xbox. The replacement cable featured a trip, which cut down the risk of your house catching fire, but left unfortunate gamers with a fried console. The cord has an interrupter switch that acts like a conventional fuse, tripping power to the unit."

Guerre Stellari in 3D

Entertainment News Article | Reuters.co.uk

George Lucas... is planning to remaster all of the "Star Wars" films for rerelease in 3-D.

...Lucas said he hadn't yet committed to a precise schedule but hoped to have the first film ready for the 30th anniversary of the original "Star Wars" movie in 2007...Lucas was joined by James Cameron, Robert Zemeckis, Robert Rodriguez and Randal Kleiser. Peter Jackson joined the group via a pretaped 3-D segment. They all implored the exhibition community to invest in digital projectors, which would allow theatres to show their upcoming movies in 3-D.

Cameron is in preproduction on the 3-D film "Battle Angel," planned for a 2007 release. Zemeckis has two 3-D features in production, and Rodriguez is readying "The Adventures of Shark Boy & Lava Girl in 3-D" for release in the summer. Jackson, who is currently filming "King Kong," announced no specific 3-D plans, but according to sources he has installed a 3-D master suite in his production offices in New Zealand.... [Lucas] showed clips from the original "Star Wars: Episode IV -- A New Hope" and the most recent "Star Wars: Episode II -- Attack of the Clones" that had been "dimensionalized," or converted into 3-D, in postproduction by the Agoura Hills, Calif.-based firm In-Three.

"... the particular technology can be used to create three-dimensional movies that go far beyond the quality and the spectacle of anything we've ever seen before. Forget the old days of wearing the red and blue glasses and the eyestrain. All of that is behind us now. These new active glasses that you're wearing and seeing 3-D with are a breakthrough in technology."

Jackson screened remastered portions from the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy that featured a looming Gollum and battle dust that virtually fell onto the audience.

$5m daily fine beckons for bad boy Microsoft | The Register

The Commission doesn't think Microsoft's trying hard enough, and it has canvassed widespread industry support to bolster its position....even long time Redmond partners are losing their patience.

...Let's see how it's gone about charging for its punishment in Europe. Suppose you create network software or hardware that needs to talk to a Microsoft file system. It could be a printer, of a storage device, or a piece of middleware. As a licensee you must agree to pay Microsoft $50,000 up front in Prepaid Royalties. Then depending on the number of users your product has, you pay on a per user basis depending on what's accessed. For the 'Print and File Server' portion you pay on a user basis up to $1900, but no less than $80 per server. For workgroup access (Domain Controllers command a higher royalty) you pay up to $600, but no less than $100 per server.

You'll need to keep accurate records, for Redmond auditor's can drop in at 14 days' notice. Failure to satisfy Microsoft auditors risks a fine of five per cent of the royalties, or $50,000 - or whichever is higher.

It's little wonder that some of the industry's biggest names, who need to deal with Windows as matter of practicality, don't want to play ball. For small vendors, it's out of the question: the margin for some network print appliances is less than the $80 minimum....

[IxT] FLASH: Attacco contro Attivissimo.net?

Vi darò maggior dettagli appena li posso pubblicare.

Microsoft's cut-price XP flops in Asia | The Inquirer

Windows XP Starter Edition, a cut down version of the full OS, debuted in Thailand last October, and Malaysia and Indonesia in February. But Microsoft’s grand plan to deliver low-cost computing to the developing world has had a lukewarm response from the all important local system builder community. The product is not sold at retail, so depends totally on buy-in from partner companies who are supposed to be bundling and promoting the software as part of their low end offer.

Maybe part of the problem is that bootleg copies of Windows XP go for less than $5 in downtown Kuala Lumpur....

This is autoresponder: Unfortunately, our library is closed, what is why this address does not work anymore. Please send me a message to vmik@newmail.ru I hope to be able to check this mailbox at least one time per month. Thank you. Valentin

Traduzione:

A stasera!

Altra truffa in diretta

http://www.update-poste.com/index.php

Attenzione!!

[IxT] Truffa in tempo reale - fine

Abbiamo ora disabilitato l'account violato".

Caso felicemente chiuso, insomma.

Bruce Schneier, the noted cryptographer, described the approach as "nice work"; but the technique has already generated a fierce debate about its reliability. But there are wider concerns about device fingerprinting: taken at face value, the technology could end anonymous net access, a cause for celebration for repressive governments everywhere.

[IxT] Truffa in tempo reale, seconda parte

http://www.bradfordelectrical.com/~tester/cgi-bin/signin.ebay.com/saw-cgi/eBayISAPIdllSignIn.php

http://signin.ebay.com/eBayISAPI.dll?SignIn&ssPageName=h:h:sin:US" ]

Antibufala UE

EUROPA - European Commission - Directorate General Press and Communication - Get your facts straight

The Press: EU regulations mean the end of bendy bananas, curved cucumbers and chunky carrots. Greengrocers must conform to the myriad of rules covering size, length, colour and texture of fruit and vegetables.
(The Times, 19 December 2003)
The Facts: Bananas are classified according to quality and size for international trade. Individual governments and the industry have in the past had their own standards with the latter's, in particular, being very stringent. The European Commission was asked by national agriculture ministers and the industry to draft legislation in this area. Following extensive consultation with the industry, the proposed quality standards were adopted by national ministers in Council in 1994.

The diameter of the fruit is a way of measuring its maturity/development. Fruit grown organically or conventionally have to reach a certain degree of maturity in order to have a reasonable chance of satisfying the consumer. The minimum diameters laid down by standards are usually fixed at a level at which most fruit are of a satisfactory quality for consumption. This minimum stage of development does not depend on the method of production, but more on cultivation techniques diminishing the number of fruits on the tree to allow a better development of the remaining ones. That is why there is no specific requirement for organic produce. The contrary would mean organic farmers being allowed to sell smaller produce.

Cucumbers do not have to be straight. There are grading rules, which were called for by representatives from the industry to enable buyers in one country to know what quality and quantity they would get when purchasing a box, unseen, from another country. Nothing is banned under these rules: they simply help to inform traders of particular specifications. The EU Single Market rules are identical to pre-existing standards set down both by the UN/OECD and the UK.

http://www.attivissimo.net/antibufala/valentin/valentin_russia.htm

http://www.attivissimo.net/antibufala/valentin/valentin_russia_minacce.htm

http://www.tu-berlin.de/www/software/showtxt.shtml?valentin99

http://www.zeusnews.it/news.php?cod=3940

Azione antipirateria UK

BPI nails 'music pirates' | The Register

...The BPI is due to attend the High Court on Friday (4 March) seeking orders for the disclosure of the identities of a further 31 illegal file sharers on a range of peer-to-peer networks, including Kazaa, eDonkey, Grokster, Soulseek, DirectConnect, Limewire, Bearshare and Imesh.

The BPI... quotes figures suggesting the number of users on file sharing network Fast Track – on which Kazaa runs – was down 45 per cent in January 2005 from its April 2003 peak. The unpalatable bundling of adware on Kazaa and the shift to other services could equally be used to explain the decline. The BPI also quotes figures that the number of eDonkey servers is down by 61 per cent and BitTorrent servers and users are down 66 per cent but fails to [provide] the timescale or source for this data.

RIAA praises “magnificent” P2P

Bainwol uses some selective statistics to show how badly the industry is hurting. With overall sales dipping only slightly in line with the economic downturn, and with CD sales now on the rebound, this is a challenge. So Bainwol uses a declining sector of the market to illustrate his point.

"In 2000, the top ten hits sold 60 million units in the U.S. Seven of the ten sold more than 5 million units each; every one of them sold at least 3 million units. Then the slide kicked in. Last year, in 2003, the top ten hits were cut almost in half, to 33 million units. Just two of the ten sold more than 5 million units; five of those top ten hits sold less than 3 million units," he reckons.

The industry's logic is based on it being a hit machine, then subsidizing other acts on this using these proceeds. But a critic might point out that if the fortune generated by hits is down so significantly - and sales are holding up - then what Bainwol claims to be his industry's basic business model is flawed.

"EETimes is running an interesting story about the future of the video codecs for HD DVDs. The Redmond Beast convinced both the Blu-ray Disc Association and the DVD Forum to adopt its WMV9 video codec over MPEG4 for the upcoming VC-1 standard that is mandated for high-definition video devices. That was a huge coup for MS. Now it turns out that Microsoft cheated and lied: its code is not as good as MPEG 4, the WMV9 reference implementation is not available, and the WMV9 test suite does not exercise all the features. The SMPTE might drop WMV9 after all.

Besieged Movie Industry Suffers Record Takings

BBC | Besieged Movie Industry Suffers Record Takings

“The BBC is reporting that the movie industry, in yet another illustration of just how much damage the Internet is doing to the long-suffering members of the MPAA, has just endured a record breaking $1Billion dollar takings for the single month of June. Clearly there is a desperate need to tighten up copyright laws in the face of this huge mountain of cash that is literally being metaphorically syphoned into the studios’ pockets. How will they survive?“

Ballmer fails to get Munich agreement

The Inquirer | Ballmer fails to get Munich agreement

THE SOFTLY spoken and quietly demure CEO of Microsoft, Steve Ballmer, has failed to persuade Munich to take the Windows route.

Instead the city has abandoned its old ally Microsoft and opted to join the Open Source axis by switching more than 14,000 PCs in the government network to Linux.

The project dubbed LiMux (Linux for Munich) will begin this year with the adoption of OpenOffice.org office suite and the Mozilla Web browser running on the jurisdiction's existing Windows NT desktops.

Halloween Documents vs Get the Facts

http://www.opensource.org/halloween/halloween11.php

I've just seen a dispatch from the front lines of the FUD wars, Huw Lynes's report from one of Microsoft's Get The Facts roadshow in Great Britain. It's a fascinating read, especially when considered in context with Halloween VII and more recent leaks out of Microsoft. The outlines of the next stage in Microsoft's anti-open-source propaganda campaign are becoming clear. It's a good time to take stock of where we are, what our favorite evil empire is doing, and how best to respond.

British Library crea archivio del Web

BBC | Effort to save UK's web heritage

Millions of web pages covering all aspects of life in the UK are to be archived in a trial project led by the British Library. The two-year project will archive some 6,000 websites in an attempt to capture a flavour of British life online. The organisers said that although the web had become the information tool of choice for many, little thought had been given to preserving websites.

The web archive is due to go live in January 2005. According to the backers of the project, there is a real danger that valuable educational, cultural and scientific resources on the web could be lost in the future.

http://www.zeusnews.it/news.php?cod=3915

Chissà come mai.

In diecimila :-)

http://www.radiocittafutura.it/dev/index.php

A stasera!
